Shining Sisters Week Eight

Anna Birchfield

Anna shares about her unique path to Clemson, the reality of finding your place is this crazy world, and the sweet sisterhood that made it all make sense.

Anna Birchfield, AC ‘18

Anna Birchfield, AC ‘18

I‘ve always wanted to be in a sorority, but no one in my family had ever been involved in Greek Life before, so I really had no idea what to expect. When I started my college search, Clemson was always where my heart pointed me. I don’t know what it was that made this place so special, but I always saw myself here. To keep things short, it wasn’t until I didn’t get accepted into Clemson that I had to truly think about myself starting college somewhere else. That ‘somewhere else’ for me turned into Appalachian State. During my first semester of freshman year there, I went through Recruitment and joined ADPi, which was great, but to be completely transparent, it was still not what I had imagined for the beginning of my college experience. I was in a place I didn’t want to be and still felt called to Clemson, which is why I decided to transfer after the fall semester. Here I am writing this today, and can say with confidence, that transferring has turned out to be the best decision I could have made.

My switch into ADPi here was initially very scary because I knew next to nothing about the girls in the chapter and I was nervous to start from ground zero with a completely new group of people. I am not going to say that my first semester at Clemson wasn’t hard, because it was, in more ways than one, but I slowly began to adapt. The spring was tough because I didn’t know many people and often felt on the outside, which is natural for anyone who is jumping in late to something. Due to this, I have to say that it was not until living on the hall this year that my time at Clemson genuinely felt right and so sweet. I have never experienced such an overwhelming feeling of gratitude that I feel for this place, this year, and all of the girls that I am surrounded by within ADPi. There is most definitely something special about the girls in this chapter. They are people who will get to know your heart, love you well, and encourage you every single day. If I could pick one thing that has meant the most to me during my time at Clemson so far, I would 100% say it is the best friends that I’ve made in ADPi. They are the biggest blessings of college yet! They are the people I get to experience life with - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and for that I am forever grateful! I don’t have the proper words to do these girls justice. They are much more than people who I simply spend time with; we cry together, eat together, go on allll the coffee runs together, and have the silliest time doing it all. It’s not often in life that you find people who constantly build you up, point you towards Christ, laugh with you until you cry, and genuinely want to listen to your needs and struggles. These silly moments on the hall are moments that I will always cherish, and I am so thankful that ADPi brought me them. ADPi Zeta Nu has changed my college experience for the better, and I know that I would not be able to say any of the same things had I not transferred - for that I am grateful!

It is a bit cliché to say that my sorority brought me my best friends, but I really can’t imagine doing college without them. The other day I was thinking about how a little over a year ago I was in high school wondering what my college friends would be like, and now I am here with them and could not be happier with how things turned out. I really do give credit to ADPi for these sweet friendships!!

Something that my friends and I joke about is how I will be planning their weddings one day. I hope to become an event coordinator specializing in weddings and social events. It has always been a long-term dream of mine to be a wedding planner because I love all things involving people, details, and organization. The thought of planning one of my friend’s weddings makes me so excited because it would be such a sweet time with all of the people I love. I will be forever grateful for the incredible people Clemson and ADPi gave me - I am so excited for the many memories there are left to be made, as I know the rest of my time here will only be even sweeter.” — Anna Birchfield, AC ‘18

Lytton Infinger

Basketball season is back! Just ask Lytton, a Student Worker for the program she loves most, Men’s Basketball, thanks to one special sister who helped bring her dreams come to life.

Lytton Infinger, AC ‘16

Lytton Infinger, AC ‘16

“Growing up, my family always loved basketball because I had relatives play in college which led to me loving the sport itself. When I was in high school, one of my friends took me to my first Clemson basketball game and I immediately fell in love with the program, the team, and the atmosphere. Coming into Clemson as a freshman, I ended up meeting one of my best friends, Abby Brownell, at ADPi Bid Day whose dad is actually the head coach of the Men’s Basketball team. She told her dad about how much I loved Clemson basketball and got me in contact with people in the office which eventually led to me getting a job as a Student Worker in the Men’s Basketball Office my sophomore year of college. Everyone that knows me knows that it has been an absolute dream come true to be able to work for the team that I love so much and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity.

In the office, I have worked directly with the Director of Basketball Operations, Director of Recruiting Operations, Administrative Assistant, and Assistant Coaching Staff. I do many different tasks such as keeping track of our recruiting system, sending weekly graphic mailings to recruits, and helping plan annual events. Every day in the office is different which is what makes my job so much fun. It has been unreal going from being just a fan to a part of this team.

My favorite memory while working for the Clemson Men’s Basketball team has been getting to travel with the team to the NCAA tournament a couple years ago. I got to fly with the team to San Diego, California where they played the first two rounds of March Madness. Getting to see everything that goes into traveling and preparing for a tournament was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

My favorite part of every Clemson Men’s Basketball game is at the very end when the team stands together to sing the alma mater. Win or lose, the team always comes together which I think is a great representation of the Clemson Family. I think it demonstrates how our players and staff love their school which is super unique and special.

This job definitely relates to my future career aspirations. Although I am still trying to pinpoint exactly what I want to do, I know I want to work in sports and this job has solidified that desire. Helping plan our annual events such as Alumni Weekend, End of the Year Banquet, Senior Night, and Tiger Wonderland has furthered my interest in sports event planning. Something else that has always interested me is working with NBA Cares which connects NBA teams to the community and charities. I know I would be happy in many different sports careers and I can’t wait to see what I end up choosing come my graduation in May!

Being a senior is extremely bittersweet. It feels like just yesterday I was moving into Manning Hall and I cannot believe my time at Clemson is coming to an end. This is a year of many “lasts,” but I am excited to open a new chapter when I graduate. When I graduate, I am hoping to find a job in a fun, new city. I am not sure exactly what my future holds, but am excited to get into the “real world” soon!

ADPi has had a tremendous impact on my Clemson career. I have had so many amazing opportunities to make connections, meet new people, and get involved in the community. I grew up helping the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville, so when I discovered that this was ADPi’s philanthropy I was automatically intrigued. It has been so rewarding and fun getting to help RMHC further through ADPi. Most importantly, ADPi has given me is the best group of friends I could ask for. I have found my people who have been by my side since freshman year and will be by my side forever. I truly cannot imagine life without them and know we will remain close no matter where we all end up after graduation.” — Lytton Infinger, AC ‘16

“Clemson has held such a special place in my heart for as long as I can remember. I can still picture my two sisters and me dressing up as Clemson cheerleaders for Halloween when we were little. Growing up in Greenville, Clemson has always felt like home. My dad graduated from here, so my family grew up attending many Clemson games. When the time came to apply for college, I really didn’t want to apply anywhere else. I knew Clemson was where I wanted to be, and I am so happy and blessed to call this place home!

I have had many favorite moments here but two that have stuck out to me have been getting to experience winning the 2016 National Championship in Tampa with my family and the 2018 National Championship here at Clemson with all of my friends. Also running down to my older sister on Bid Day and my little sister running down to me. These are the ones that I will never forget and will cherish forever!! Thinking of these moments makes me smile, and I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to experience memories like these.

ADPi has impacted my time at Clemson more than I could have imagined. ADPi has blessed me with the best of friends and memories that I will cherish forever. I have grown so much as a person because of all of my friends and sisters – they encourage me, lift me up, and are always there when I need them. I will forever be thankful for all of the friendships I have made here at Clemson and in ADPi, and I know that these relationships will continue to grow even after I graduate!

Working at Greenville’s News Station WYFF this semester has been so much fun! I never really thought I would be interested in the media industry, but it has been such an enjoyable learning experience. Everyone at WYFF is so nice and wants to help me learn, and I love everyone I work with! I have gotten to experience all of the different departments at the station – the sales department, creative services/marketing department, and the news department. I have learned so many different and cool things like selling commercials and billboards, seeing the behind-the-scenes work of putting together an ad, brainstorming with creative services to come up with different marketing plans, and going out with breaking news to see live news happen. I’ve been able to oversee and shadow so many great people!

It is so bittersweet being a senior. Thinking about how I only have one semester left at the best University makes me so thankful but also sad. I am trying not to think of all the “lasts” and just enjoy each day and live in the moment. This has been the best four years. I am excited to see what the future holds, but I will miss Clemson so much. Simple things like walking to class, staying up late with my roommates, and trying to study with my friends but it really just turns into a big laughing session (J) are things I am going to miss the most.

After I graduate, I plan to pursue a career in marketing or sales. I am not sure exactly where I will be, but I know God has a plan for me and I’m excited to see what it is.

Younger sisters, enjoy every second at Clemson. I know it sounds so cliché, but time really does fly. Don’t blink and you’ll be a senior! Make time for the people and things you love and that mean the most to you. You have limited time here at Clemson, soak it all in!!” — Alexis Kiriakides, AC ‘16

“I chose Clemson last minute... almost went to Bama (yikes). I just felt like this is where the Lord was calling me and I also fell in love when I toured in high school. A huge defining moment for me at Clemson was when I joined student media, it really allowed my passion for journalism to come into fruition. I started as a sports reporter with TigerVision then was the Assistant Sports Director my sophomore year, but have moved on to doing internships with local news stations.   I currently intern with 105.5 The Roar and WSPA Channel 7. I'm on a gameday radio show for 105.5 then am doing sideline for Clemson Basketball with WSPA. The Tiger Tailgate Show with 105.5 is the most fun I've had all year. It's a 2-hour pregame show every Clemson football game, home and away. I have two segments, about 5 minutes each. CJ Spiller is the host and I'm a contributor. He's become a great friend and an awesome connection.

ADPi has been a great source of joy for me. There have been countless times where I've stepped into an ADPi event and have forgotten about the stresses I face in college. Being a senior is also SO fun. I don't fear the future at all... I feel like I've prepared myself well. Advice for younger girls is to do just that... prep yourself in the years at Clemson so you're not freaked out when May rolls around. Create healthy habits. Eat well, workout, study hard, sleep, MAKE CONNECTIONS!!! Connections are everything.” — Sophia Radebaugh, AC ‘16

Laurel Williams

With an eye for design and a heart for the Clemson Family, Laurel is learning to tell stories through a whole new lens.

Laurel Williams, AC ‘18

Laurel Williams, AC ‘18

“My story is full of people who have loved me well, even when I did not deserve it. I am grateful to be able to put into words just a small piece of that story that continues to grow and be challenged every single day here at Clemson.

I have always been a storyteller. My friends will tell you, I love to talk and share stories, whether mine or someone else’s. Growing up, I have found many ways to tell stories, but photography has to be my favorite. I have always been creative-minded and there are many ways to express creativity through pictures. My favorite thing about photography is the chance to simply capture the life and beauty happening around me. There is a time and place for planned photoshoots to bring ideas to life, but my absolute favorite thing in the world is just having my camera in hand throughout my day. My camera has quite literally just become an extension of my right hand, settings always on ‘high-speed continuous,’ ready to capture the world surrounding me. I cannot create beauty, but I can find beauty in the simplest of things. Sometimes that beauty is found in the peacefulness of sitting out on Bowman, and other times it is found in the midst of gameday hype. It doesn’t really matter what setting I am in, people are unique and beautiful and although my photos cannot do them justice, I sure do love to try. Something that has been helpful for me throughout my journey with photography has been my mindset behind it all. I do not think of myself as a photographer, instead, I am just a girl who loves taking pictures. It may seem silly, but if I focus on being a ‘photographer’ then I spend too much time comparing my work to others’. However, if I think of myself as just Laurel, who happens to love taking pictures, then I am free to just enjoy capturing the beauty I see around me.

Clemson has always been my “family” school, so there was no question in my mind that it was my #1 choice. I chose Clemson knowing that it would be an incredible school, but I had no idea that this place would become my home.

Oddly enough, I never actually toured Clemson until two weeks before I moved into Manning Hall my freshman year. I was already ready to come to Clemson, but was not prepared to fall in love. My big brother let me tag along with him one day on one of his last summer tours. I went on the tour, and watched him show his love for his school to complete strangers, welcoming them to the place he called home. It was that day that I really became excited about calling this place my home too, and it was also that day that I knew I had to be a tour guide. I wanted to be the person to welcome people to their new home, to make them feel loved and cared for in just a two hour walk across campus. Little did I know then that my CUGA family would hold my closest friends and the greatest learning experiences for me during my time here. I cannot express enough how much each and every member of that organization means to me.

I never knew much about Greek Life growing up, and did not feel the need to join a specific Greek Life organization coming into college. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I decided to join ADPi because I simply wanted the opportunity to spend more time with some of the incredible friends I had already made. I ran home to some of my very favorite people on bid day! There was no question in my mind that ADPi was just another exciting piece in making Clemson my forever home!

I have no shortage of Clemson Moments, mostly including my older brother Micah, my CUGA Fam, and Freshman Council ’21. My freshman year I remember walking up to a junior who I recognized from social media and introducing myself. I was expecting her to be friendly and find a way to easily end the conversation. Instead, she pulled out her calendar and planned coffee with me right in that moment. I was shocked that a junior, who seemed to have her life put together, cared at all to spend time with me. I soon realized that was a theme among the upperclassmen at Clemson and was shocked at how loved I felt here. It has made me want to be that kind of person for other people at this school, to take time out of my day to care for my Clemson Family. Also, combining my love for Clemson and photography by shooting on the football field is honestly one of my favorite things I have ever gotten to do!” - Laurel Williams, AC ‘18

Lauren Mossburg

Lauren Mossburg AC ‘16

Lauren Mossburg AC ‘16

“This past year I served on the Panhellenic Executive Council as the Vice President of Public Relations. While on the Council I had the opportunity to work with girls in all 12 different chapters on campus to further and promote our Panhellenic community. Serving in this position gave me the ability to grow outside of Alpha Delta Pi by impacting other chapters and promoting Panhellenic love across the campus. I also had the opportunity to see Recruitment from a different side and got to see all the Potential New Members find their forever homes as Panhellenic women. Although I enjoyed my experience, I am very thankful that I can call ADPi my forever home.

Throughout my time in ADPi I had the opportunity to serve as the Corresponding Secretary, as well as the Ronald McDonald House Chair. I loved both positions and feel like I really had the opportunity to make an impact. Serving as the Ronald McDonald House chair was very impactful because I got to work with the RMH staff in Greenville in the naming of the Clemson ADPi room and it was amazing to be able to see that project through to the finish.

As I look toward graduation and the future, I am excited but nervous to see what is in store for me. This past summer I worked in Washington, D.C. for Gartner, Inc. where I spoke with clients from all over the world about technology and how it is impacting their businesses. I grew so much over the summer both professionally and personally and discovered more about what I want to do after I graduate.

As I finish my senior year I think back to all the amazing memories both Clemson and ADPi have given me. Clemson University and Alpha Delta Pi have impacted me more than I could have ever imagined. I am halfway through my senior year and I wish everyday that time would slow down and I could go back to my freshman year and relive college all over again. I will be eternally thankful for the forever friendships and memories I have created.” - Lauren Mossburg, AC ‘16

I don't think I have ever been given better advice. I have had a banner of it hung in my room since freshman year and I will hang it in my next home after graduation.”

  • Where is your happy place?

“My favorite spot on campus is the Lake Hartwell Dykes. I enjoy being outside so walking the Dykes on a nice afternoon is one of my favorite things to do. My sisters and I will try to meet up to walk whenever we are free to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Clemson weather. I also love to be out on Lake Hartwell with the Watersports club anytime that I have the chance!”

Autumn O’Shields

In a world of strides for superficial success and perfection, Autumn is as selfless as it gets as she describes her unfiltered social media strategy and positive lifestyle.

Autumn O’Shields, AC ‘19

Autumn O’Shields, AC ‘19

“I used to go through group pictures and look solely at myself... and I am not going to lie, I still do that sometimes! It's a struggle not to look at yourself first, especially as critical as we can all be about our looks. As time went on, I started disliking all pictures in general because they had no story at all, just a way to review the things about me that weren't quite good enough..  a never ending cycle! I remember at the very start of high school thinking that if I could be the one behind the camera, I could make pictures somehow happier, maybe a little less posed, so I bought my own camera and the first day I bought it, I remember asking my 9th grade best friend Jordyn to let me take pictures of her. I dreamed up all these ideas, that maybe I could picture someone else from the perspective of others because I wholeheartedly believe that if every girl could see themselves in the shoes of others, they would realize just how beautiful they are! In reality, it doesn't make much sense to call ourselves ugly because we don't even see ourselves that often. We don't watch ourselves fall asleep or read our favorite book, or enjoy time with friends, or look at someone we love... there's no mirror in our way when we are laughing and smiling and being kind to others... the moments where we are truly just being ourselves. I treasured these dreams so much that I have found the most beautiful pictures to be just that-- happy ones, real ones, pictures of someone from my perspective when they are just being themselves. My Instagram is really just my favorites album or my Snapchat memories, since I don't have any other form of social media; it's my way of collecting pictures of places and people that have mean a great deal to me, as a journal per se. I can't imagine using it any other way. The pictures I have collected make me so happy because they are the sweetest day to day memories and moments, no matter how simple or extravagant they appear on the screen.

At first, I didn't know if Clemson was for me. I thought with a school so close, so football oriented, SO this and that -- that I may not be able to sit on a bench in the shade and read a book peacefully, or ride my blue beach bike and pretend to be at the beach or even just have my own, individual experience... but boy I could not have been more wrong. I have found Clemson to be everything I wanted and more. I changed all my preconceived ideas when I saw a girl on my tour here studying on the grass, in the shade, and she was smiling... a funny thing to do while studying... quite noticeable to me, and though I didn't ask her, I'm pretty sure she wasn't smiling to do all her homework but smiling to be in Clemson... to love a place so much that she did all her work happily because she wanted to stay. I saw her, and naturally thereafter I started recognizing all the places I belonged here, all the shady spots of Clemson: in the hidden places underneath trees, on every rocking chair of Manning Porch, and every bench along the North Green. I can confidently say now that I can't imagine myself anywhere else. Clemson has quickly become my favorite place to be.

I do not know if there is a preconceived idea of a stereotypical sorority girl, but if there is one, I do not know that I would fit. I chose ADPi because during recruitment I laughed with girls about dropping my Starbucks sausage egg & cheese on the ground before I walked in the room.. and ate it anyways.. or had my clip-on earring come off right when I walked into ADPi's room for recruitment, wearing one earring, holding the other, for the entirety of that round. I talked to real people with genuine smiles. I saw it as a place where I could be myself, where the girls even thought I was refreshing... the girl who is actually a complete mess wearing everything that is my sister’s since I did not have anything quite fitting for rounds.

I am a nursing major, and though I am honestly going to say I do not even know yet what all the options are when it comes to types of nurses or what I hope to do with that, I can say I am surely a girl who enjoys options and being around people. I originally wanted to be a counselor, for so long for a matter of fact, until I realized counseling is in every job, every crack and cranny if you want it to be. So when I think of nursing, I think of reminding women just how beautiful they are-- reminding them that they are strong, independent, but gentle and soft too, all wrapped up in one. I think of reminding men of the fathers they are to the fatherless, reminding them how brave they are, how admirable they are. I hope not to forget the simple things like just reminding them to take their medication when they get home... that information will surely be important as well!

Freshman year is real sweet; my one goal this year is to be a really great friend, and though I fail on the daily, it has been so special to stay home some nights and watch movies with a friend who just needs a relaxing night, or sleep a little less to have a good conversation, or even procrastinate a little extra so I can sit down and eat dinner with someone who reminds me of home. Freshman year is the best, and I am holding on to every moment.” - Autumn O’Shields, AC ‘19

Madison Howard, AC ‘19

Madison Howard, AC ‘19

“I am officially official!! I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me here at Clemson. I worked hard to be where I am today and being a part of the Alpha Delta Pi chapter here at Clemson makes college life a whole lot sweeter.

Growing up in Greenville so close to Clemson, attending Clemson football games was a tradition in my family. Ever since a young age, I knew I wanted to attend Clemson University. I worked hard in high school to get the grades that would allow me to attend my dream school. However, after a long day of school my senior year, I came home and opened the mailbox to instead find a Bridge Program acceptance letter. I was disappointed and conflicted on what I should do. But knowing this was the path to Clemson I was meant to take, I enrolled. I told myself this was what God intended for me and I fully trusted Him during the process.

Having that year of transition taught me many things about myself. I began learning who I was and what I wanted to be. When going through the Bridge Program, I looked up to many women that were a part of Alpha Delta Pi at Clemson. Now, as a sophomore Biology major at the University and a member of ADPi, I am on track with who I want to become more than ever! I have always struggled to find where I fit in, and now I can confidently say I found my place. It’s only been two months since bid day, and I have already made such amazing friendships in ADPi. Walking around campus and seeing so many of my sisters makes each school day a little brighter. Alpha Delta Pi is my new forever home.

  • Fav Clemson memory?

“My best Clemson memory so far would definitely be bid day!! Running home to my ADPi family was the best feeling ever. The amount of love I felt that day was insane and getting to experience in Death Valley wasn't too bad either. It is definitely a day I will never forget.”

  • Happy place?

“My happy place is definitely the beach. Literally any beach. It is so peaceful and relaxing; I can never get enough of it. Ever since I was little, my family would go on vacation to multiple beaches throughout the year. It will always be something I count down the days to and have a special place in my heart.”

“I participated in my high school pageants my sophomore, junior, and senior years. I also did two prelims to Miss South Carolina teen. But there is no one else I would have wanted to represent on that stage my senior year, I feel truly honored to represent the first and finest! I really enjoyed getting to know all of the girls participating. I was surprised at how close we all got in just a short period of time. The biggest challenge for me was learning the opening number dance, I have never been the best dancer so I learned to just have fun with it.

ADPi has given me an abundance of connections that will continue to benefit me for years after I graduate. I feel like each of us will have a connection that we will cherish the rest of our lives. It has also given me friends who all share similar goals and interests. We all take pride in our reputation and never fail to hold each other accountable for our actions.

It is so bittersweet being a senior. I am not looking forward to not being able to see my friends everyday this time next year but I am excited for what the future holds. I plan to work in real estate in the Lake Keowee area for a year or two to save up some money. I eventually want to move back to Nashville and pursue a career in the country music industry.

My advice would be to just get involved as much as you can without spreading yourself too thin. Along the way, create meaningful relationships with people and really get to know them on a deeper level.” - Peyton Roach, AC ‘16

Shining Sisters Week Five

Delaney Dowling

Born and raised on Clemson orange, Delaney embodies the true Tiger spirit of tradition and excellence as she carves her own path of growth and turns a family dream into reality.

Delaney Dowling, AC ‘17

Delaney Dowling, AC ‘17

“My mom and dad both attended and met at Clemson! It’s exciting to follow in their footsteps, while leaving my own legacy here. I’ve always loved the thought of coming to Clemson, but it wasn’t until Hunter Renfrow caught the game winning touchdown at the 2016 National Championship that I decided I wanted to come to Clemson. After looking over and seeing both of my parents sobbing, I knew I wanted Clemson to impact me as much as it has impacted my parents. Growing up in a Clemson Family, I’ve seen Clemson give back to my family years after my parents time here.

ADPi kick-started my Clemson career. Early on in my freshman year, upperclassmen in ADPi gave me guidance and encouragement that launched my Clemson experience. Older ADPi’s have opened me up to new organizations, encouraged me to dive into major-specific programs, shared valuable wisdom, and supported me when I needed someone to look up to. I’m also thankful for my Alpha Class for the life-long friendships I made the first few weeks of freshman year.

ADPi has played a role in two of my best Clemson memories. My freshman year, I remember pomping our Homecoming float on Bowman when I suddenly noticed Dabo making his rounds. When he came up to the ADPi and Kappa Sig float, I met him and snagged a quick selfie! The Homecoming floats have always been my favorite Clemson tradition, so it was especially exciting to add Dabo to my Homecoming float build memories. Another cherished memory was rubbing Howard’s Rock and running down the Hill in Death Valley after finding out I was selected to be in the newest Tour Guide class. Kendall Goedeke (AC ’17) and I grabbed hands and ran down the Hill beaming with excitement! I know we’ve given 110% as tour guides; I hope we made Frank Howard proud as we rubbed his Rock.

The Delaney that pulled into the Horseshoe in early August of 2017 is not the same Delaney writing today. I’ve learned that loyal friends are the best friends, I've realized how much I have to be thankful for, and I’m much more confident in my personal strengths and interests. My failures as a friend, a teammate, an intern, and a student are shaping and growing me for the future. My dad’s life motto is ‘Built For It.’ He encourages our family in our failures, and successes as a step towards becoming who we are built to be.” - Delaney Dowling, AC ‘17

Emily Anne Godbold

A true girl boss, Emily Anne, is spreading her passion for female empowerment within our chapter and beyond by co-founding Girl Up Clemson, a campus organization started by the United Nations Foundation which aims to inspire social change and gender equality right where you are.

Emily Anne Fodbold, AC ‘16

Emily Anne Fodbold, AC ‘16

“Hey y’all, my name is Emily Anne Godbold. I am from Myrtle Beach, SC and a senior in Alpha Delta Pi. My membership in ADPi has allowed me to grow in my own scholarship, leadership, and sisterhood. ADPi has empowered me to be a leader on campus through my forever-lasting friendships and sisterly support. I was inspired to co-found Girl Up with Joanna Lilly (an ADPi sister) because I am passionate about empowering women and girls around the globe. As a Women’s Leadership major, I wanted to practice my leadership philosophy outside of the classroom while making an impact within our club, across Clemson’s campus, and around the world.

Girl Up’s mission at Clemson is to fundraise and raise awareness for girls in less developed countries and empower women across campus. My favorite part of leading Girl Up as President is to support and empower women in the club to find their voice and put their passions into actions that bring about positive change. Establishing a student organization from the ground up has its challenges; however, being persistent with passion and competency, Girl Up Clemson has grown and developed into a flourishing student organization. This organization has taught me how to engage members, manage projects, lead a team, facilitate meetings, and support our #girlheros.

As a senior, I am both nervous and excited to start a new chapter of my life. I am planning to find a career in consulting where I can make an impact. I want to continue following my passions and maintaining life-long relationships.” - Emily Anne Godbold, AC ‘16

Kate Brownell

Kate is a freshman who sure is hitting the ground running by channeling her eye for fashion and marketing coursework into buying and social media management for one of Clemson’s cutest boutiques, The Fizz.

Kate Brownell, AC ‘19

Kate Brownell, AC ‘19

“Ever since I was little, I have always loved fashion. My mom used to get so annoyed with my sister and I when we were little because we were always so picky when it came to what we wore. Everything had to look and fit just right. Meanwhile, other kids our age would be walking around with their shoes on the wrong feet and didn’t seem to care at all. Last spring, I had the amazing opportunity to start working with The Fizz. I am one of the buyers for the boutique and I absolutely love going to the Mart in Atlanta and shopping online for cute pieces for the store. I also run the Instagram page (@shopthefizz) so I am always in the store taking pics and posting. The most challenging part would probably be how much time and effort goes into running the Instagram. I have to come up with creative picture ideas, edit, then I use an app to plan out all the photos and rearrange them to make the feed look just right, and then post! Since I am a marketing major, working with The Fizz has been a great opportunity for me. It’s a ton of work but I really love it!!

Growing up, I had always been so excited to go through Recruitment and join a sorority. My older sister, Abby, is a senior ADPi, but I knew going through Recruitment that I really wanted to keep an open mind to all chapters because although we are very similar in ways, we are also very different. I honestly thought my decision was going to be a lot harder than it actually was. Although it is cliché to say, there really was something special about ADPi. Every single girl I talked to I loved, whether that was in rounds or waiting outside in line with other potential new members. Standing in line for my very first round of ADPi, I met Bella Powell, and we didn’t know it then, but we would spend each round of ADPi together and become great friends by the end of Recruitment. One of the most special moments I was able to share with her was sitting next to each other in Preference round and running home together to ADPi on Bid Day. ADPi has already put so many amazing people in my life and has brought me the friends of a lifetime.

It has been so special getting to share my experience with my sister, from crying to her and my soon-to-be Big Diamond Sister Georgia in Preference round, to running to her on Bid Day, and then experiencing Initiation with her. I’m so excited to spend the next four years in a chapter that pushes me to be the best version of myself! Go ADPi and you won’t regret it.” - Kate Brownell, AC ‘19

Fun Facts:

  • Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

“Sophia Bush for sure. She is absolutely stunning and such a girl boss in One Tree Hill.”

  • Dream job?

“My dream job would probably have to be becoming a buyer for Revolve.”

  • Embarrassing moment?

“One time I was at Chipotle and as I was walking with my food, I slipped and fell, throwing my food in the air, landing on my hands and knees. My friends and I could not stop laughing at myself.”

Shining Sisters Week Four

Hello October!

This week’s Shining Sisters teach us that no dream is ever out of reach. The pursuit of what colors your life is a noble one; find your “why” and live it.

Bryan Boykin

Ladies, we have a Natty Champ on our hands! It’s no shot in the dark to say that Bryan is blowing away the competition while kicking gender roles to the curb at the same time.

Bryan Boykin, AC ‘19

Bryan Boykin, AC ‘19

“Hey guys! I’m Bryan Douglass Boykin - no, my parents weren’t hoping for a boy. I’m a freshman, Pre-business major from Statesboro, Georgia. I’m a lifelong Clemson fan with my dad graduated from Clemson in 1994. Clemson football has been a huge part of my life. I’ve been coming to the games and cheering for the Tigers since I was little. Clemson was always my goal and I was super excited to become a member of the Class of 2023(ish).

I came into Recruitment only knowing two or three girls at Clemson. My main goal was to find a group of girls that felt a little like home. I graduated from high school with 42 people in my class (about half the size of our alpha class) so the idea of a close knit, family atmosphere would not be an exaggeration. I noticed the same family atmosphere during my visits to ADPi. This feeling and, of course, my connection with my soon to be Big Diamond Sister, Elizabeth, was what made me know ADPi was where I wanted to be!

When I was asked to write about my background and success in shooting sports, it only made sense to start at the beginning - with a puppy! When I was ten, I got a Boykin Spaniel puppy. We took her to be trained and the trainer introduced us to Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) Hunt Tests. HRC is a male-dominated (usually older men) sport that is a simulated duck hunt judged on by how well my dog and I work together to complete the hunt.  My dog and I passed to the “final” level but there was a problem - I was terrified of guns and I had to handle a gun to compete at this level. I had never needed to touch one so I didn’t want to. Being from South Georgia that is a little out of the ordinary. But it wasn’t an option, so I learned. And when I say I learned, I went all in.

I joined my high school shotgun team which got me involved with a totally new group of people that I came to love. I shoot in three events: Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. All three of these events involve very small, fast moving, orange clay targets. I shot on our varsity shotgun team 8th-12th grades as well as played the drums, tennis and basketball. My senior year I won the State Championship in the Trap portion of the State Tournament. My little sister, Garris, won second place so that was pretty special too! The best things about shooting are that I will be able to enjoy this sport forever and I’ve made some incredible friends and traveled to some amazing places to shoot.

And, it all circles back to the dog… after learning how to handle a gun pretty well, the dog and I continued competing and this summer my dog and I partnered with another HRC handler, a UGA vet student, and competed in the inaugural collegiate retrieving event called the Super Retriever Series University (SRSU) in Arkansas. We worked against top collegiate teams from all over the country and we won the Championship! It was cool to represent Clemson before I’d even taken a class! I’ve had some amazing experiences… all thanks to a puppy!” - Bryan Boykin, AC ‘19

Fun Facts:

  • Where is your happy place?

“I know it’s cheesy, but my happy place is truly Death Valley in Clemson, SC during a Saturday night football game. I’ve been coming with my family every fall for 18 years. To be a student and get to go to the games is a dream come true.”

  • Childhood trend you miss?

“Silly bands!! I always had them on my wrist ready to show off their shapes and trade them with my friends. They definitely bring back good memories :)”

  • Favorite childhood memory?

“Throughout my childhood, my family has taken a trip every summer somewhere to fish - whether its Boca Grande, the Keys, or our annual trip to the Turks & Caicos Islands - we fish every summer. My daddy has a bucket list of fish he wants my sister and me to catch. I love spending family time doing something we all love in some of the most beautiful places in the world!”

Elizabeth O’Donnell

Expression feeds the soul, just ask Elizabeth. Her fire for dance ignited a collegiate career and an understanding of the freedom in following the things that make you feel alive.

Elizabeth O’Donnell, AC ‘18

Elizabeth O’Donnell, AC ‘18

“Honestly, when I was graduating from high school, I knew I wasn’t ready to stop dancing because it had been such a large part of my life for so long and helped me through so many hard situations that I really felt like I would struggle through college without dance. So, Tiger Dancers was a blessing in disguise because the team allowed me to go to my dream school and continue what I love to do. Since dancing has always been a way that I’ve been able to express myself and get away from the world, just being able to dance in college is my favorite part, but I also really love the girls I’m on the team with. This year especially, we are all really close and I feel like I could go to them for anything.

This team has blessed me with so many opportunities already and I still have one more year! The Tiger Dancers dance team gets to travel with the band to all post season games so last year I got to go to Charlotte, Dallas, and San Francisco. I cannot relay in words how amazing the 2018 National Championship was in person, I just kept thinking, “This is a dream.” However, with these opportunities, I’ve definitely overcome a few challenges. I always have to remember to balance my schoolwork, dancing and extracurriculars because I want to do everything all the time but that’s just not possible in the fall during football season because I end up spreading myself too thin. I’ve also learned that, just like my parents always told me, people are always watching you, especially if you are in sparkles and holding pom poms. For example, the kids in the Sunday School class I volunteer in, the dance studio I teach at, people around campus or even people at stores would recognize me as a Tiger Dancer and I wouldn't even be wearing anything Clemson. So that aspect of the team has definitely taught me a lot about representing myself and something larger like a University well.

Finally, I would not be where I am without my Zeta Nu sisters. ADPi has taught me to go after what I want confidently, passionately, and with love. The chapter as a whole accepts me for who I am and has pushed me to be my best and strive towards goals I may not have thought of on my own. Through academics, volunteering, and good ‘ole social events, I know I will never be alone. I have 280 sisters that would cross the world and beyond to help me out in any situation and push me to be my best. Even more so than that, I know that I could talk to any single one of these girls about anything from Netflix to a challenge I’m facing in my life and they would be just as engaged for either conversation, which I think is really unique. We really are a sisterhood, and I love that about ADPi.” - Elizabeth O’Donnell, - AC ’18

Fun Facts:

  • If you could eat dinner with one person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

“If I could eat dinner with anyone it would have to be Katherine Johnson or Michelle Obama because I think they are such boss women and they did such great work in areas women aren’t always welcome and I think it would be interesting to pick their brains and see what advice they could give me about navigating a more male directed world and learn more about their lives.”

  • Where is your happy place?

“My happy place is Folly Beach, South Carolina. I have so many great memories on that beach, it feels like my second home. I like to think about it when I’m stressed because those memories calm me down and remind me to reevaluate my life. Stress is only temporary! This is why we work!!!!”

  • Who is your role model?

“My role model is my mom. I would not be where I am today without all of her sacrifices, support and knowledge. She is so selfless in everything she does and if I could be even half of the person she is when I am older, I would be lucky.”

Betsy Cook

Betsy’s love of nutrition, fitness, and cooking inspired her to find a healthy, protein-packed, yet delicious bite and now she’s getting down to business. Striving to “Be fit. Be fueled. Be full,” Besty’s Bites are only beginning.

Betsy Cook, AC ‘17

Betsy Cook, AC ‘17

“The backstory of Betsy’s Bites: I started making them in the 8th grade and would just give them to friends and family. They always said I needed to sell them and make a business out of them, but I never had time or would come up with more excuses to not do it. Earlier this year, I was talking to my grandmother, mom, and boyfriend, Reid, and we all decided that this needed to be a thing and I could at least venture out and try it. I met with some friends Brian and Sassy, creators and owners of Palmetto Cheese, and they really encouraged me to go for it and gave me a lot of great tips and ideas. Some things were hard to hear, but it was all very helpful and necessary. Finally when I got back to school, I started posting on Instagram and telling people I came in contact with, and suddenly it exploded. I had so many orders I didn’t even know what to do with them. It has been so fun, rewarding and challenging all at the same time! I have had to juggle and manage my time better but I have learned a lot and grown a lot. I have always loved to cook and make things for other people, but I never thought it would take me here. My family, boyfriend and friends have been very supportive and helped me in so many ways along the way.

I would say ADPi has impacted me through meeting new people and connecting with new people. It is so cool to me to see how many different girls I have been able to meet and have great conversations with all because of ADPi. Without this connection I probably would’ve never met any of them.

As my last semester at Clemson approaches, I am overwhelmed with so many different emotions. I am so excited for my next step that the Lord is leading me to. It is so cool to see how He has prepared me for this next step and leading me to do His will. I am sad to be leaving the University but hope to stay in Clemson as long as I can. I love this town and all of the friends I have made in it. Clemson has been the best four years and brought me the man of my dreams. I can’t believe it’s coming to a close in just three and a half short years. I will always cherish the memories I have made!” - Besty Cook, AC ‘17

Fun Fact:

  • Famous person you’d like to be BFFs with?

“If I could be best friends with a famous person I would pick Joey Batson, the football strength coach. I understand this is probably so strange but I love motivational speeches and high energy situations. He obviously possesses both and I think it would have been so cool to have him as a coach.”

  • Where is your happy place?

“My happy place would definitely be at a drive-in movie, perfect temperature (about 70 degree), in cozy clothes, with Reid and my dogs (Nellie and Waylon)”

  • Favorite childhood memory?

“Some of my favorite childhood memories are going to Georgia football games with my family growing up. My daddy would take me and my sisters to games as often as we could go and we always had the best day!”
